about
Written for childhood acquaintance and now good friend Steve Lamb, about a time we met as 10 year olds out on the wing, Steve became a blistering heavy metal guitarist and me a dodgy songwriter xx
Steve features as our special guest lead guitarist on the track, still kicking my ass ;-)
lyrics
Whippet on the wing
When I was a boy I couldn’t dance or sing
So I started playing soccer met a whippet on the wing
Tried my best to mark him but he’d beat me to the ball
He bounced like a Roebuck and left me in the stall
He ran like the wind and he darted like a moth
Left me feeling dizzy and a slumping like a sloth
Turned me to pauper when I thought I was a king
Yeah that was the day I met a whippet on the wing
Whippet on the wing, whippet on the wing
I tried to bring him down but like a Kangaroo he’d spring
I thought I was cool I thought I was king
But I soon learned to truth from the whippet on the wing
So they put me in goal cos I couldn’t get a hold
Of this long haired skinny boy whose name I wasn’t told
Whose crosses came over like arrows in the air
This kid was just too good man it didn’t seem fair
Put me on my backside put me in the mud
Felt like I was destined to be chopping up wood
Made me think twice made me wanna learn to sing
Yeah that was the day I met the whippet on the wing
Whippet on the wing, whippet on the wing
I tried to bring him down but like a Kangaroo he’d spring
I thought I was cool I thought I was king
But I soon learned to truth from the whippet on the wing

Guillemot Days whisks us to a glistening shoreline, awash with 10 sublime songs full of serene hope. Compelling right from the buoyant opener Edge Of The World and Butterfly overflows with soaring, twangy sunshine. For a fave, so close with the lush vocals, melodic layers of Flowers Of Hope versus Peace And Plenty: an intriguing, modern parlour song both eerie and exquisite, voices and clarinet blending into something quite special. This album is a musical lighthouse on a dark day. Unmissable. anitajoyce

What a tribute, I haven’t the words to say how this group have been the soundtrack to my life, through good and bad.
Anything that helps is the least I can do, missed dearly. Joe Zux

John Drumbo French from Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band worked with Thompson on two albums along with Fred Frith and Henry Kaiser.
Those two French, Frith, Kaiser and Thompson albums led me to this.
Also, Richard Thompson taught Hugh Cornwell (of The Stranglers) how to play the bass guitar in a band when they were both at the same school (Emil and The Detectives?).
With a career spanning 50 years and playing with two of my heroes (French and Cornwell) Thompson has produced a fascinating EP. yellowcakeuf6

Swill's Sunday night Facebook live gigs have been a rare high point in a terrible year. A superb singer and songwriter, in fine voice and the guitars sounding gorgeous. A great collection of some fine moments and some TMTCH tracks rarely heard live for years.
